If you are anything like me, you waited with bated breath for the 2018 Pantone reveal. And here it is…Ultra Violet!
I was quite taken aback at first. I mean, its purple. PURPLE I thought, why on earth…? And then I read Pantone Colour Institutes Executive director, Leatrice Eiseman say this of their decision: “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way for what is yet to come.” So well said. I connected with that immediately and got all goose pimply.
Purple was discovered, believe it or not, by the Phoenicians in 4th century BC. They invented a way to extract an intense purple-red dye from a small species of sea snail found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean Sea. It was, however, very expensive to produce (10 000 snails per gram!). Hence the reason it was only worn by Kings, Queens and Emperors.
So how do you incorporate this royal colour into your home without making it look like Barney the dinosaur exploded all over the place? If you are not the bold daring type, the easiest route for you to take is one of simplicity. Start with accessories. Scatter cushions, flowers, vases and candles are all great items to incorporate this bold colour without feeling overwhelmed by its grandeur. These small décor items teamed with toned down neutral furniture, is sure to please those who would only like a splash of colour in their home.
Have a look at these Pantone colour harmonies for inspiration:
If you are one for the dramatic and bold, you can go all out with a dark, moody palette. Try adding an accent wall using either paint or a detailed wallpaper with the darker tones of this colour. Pair this with dark oversized furniture, large green indoor plants, stand out pieces of art, and you will have a dramatic, moody atmosphere.
For me, the gentle mix of rose, wine, almond and violet shades are just superb. These combined, genuinely give an atmosphere of peace, tranquillity and calm.
Whatever your style desire, be sure to take some inspiration from Pantone’s Ultra Violet story: “Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.” Told you…Goose pimply with excitement 😀
